SAE type 630 stainless steel (more commonly known as 17-4; also known as UNS 17400) is a grade of martensitic precipitation-hardened stainless steel. It contains approximately 15–17.5% chromium and 3–5% nickel, as well as 3–5% copper. 17-4 can be heat treated to high levels of strength and hardness, and features corrosion resistance and machinability comparable to austenitic 304 stainless. Being martensitic, 17-4 is magnetic. 17-4 is capable of being hardened up to approximately 44 Rc when heat treated to condition H900.
Type 416 is a martensitic free machining grade of stainless steel that can be hardened by heat treatment to achieve elevated strength and hardness. Due to its low cost and ready machinability, 416 stainless steel is readily used in its highly tempered state. It exhibits better machining characteristics than austenitic grades, however, sacrifices corrosion resistance.
Type 446 is a ferritic stainless steel with scaling resistance up to 2000ºF (1090ºC.) used for furnace parts, oil burners, heat exchangers, kiln liners, glass molds and stationary soot blowers in steam boilers. Type 446 is the only heat-resistant alloy that will tolerate molten copper and brass. The alloy does not, however, have good high-temperature strength. The nitrogen addition is for grain refinement.
